Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare O Rehua Whanganui, 11 Dec 2021 – 29 May 2022

Curated by Greg Donson. With Monique Lacey, Simon Ogden, Paul Cullen, Finn Ferrier and Wesley John Fourie.

Photos by Michael McKeagg.

The contemporary phenomenon of athleisure represents how blurry the boundaries between work and leisure have become, and signal that the wearer is engaged in a process of ‘optimisation’, that is, she is practising pre-emptive control over her body, not only to reach an ideal of physical beauty, but also to meet the never-ending demands of work.

This work reflects on the visual language of athleisure as an embodiment of late capitalism’s ideal woman – a cybernetically charged expression of female efficiency.
